Welcome to our first episode looking at laws in the Bible! This series should help you understand what the Bible is and the story it tells. Tim: Yeah, it is. Then they're off into the desert and then it's just that bad news. Jon: But this other exercise is, how can we distill it down to its essence? And they feel random and they feel irrelevant oftentimes. It's not that hard actually I think to get. Jon: The parables of Jesus also introduce us to how he thinks about himself, and what he's doing in his kind of place in human history. Tim: Correct. In Exodus 12, it's the first statement of the laws about the Exodus, the rules and the rituals for holding the feast. Actually, you know of a couple of your second cousins who have gone missing. Some say there are 611 commands; others say 613. Overall, Tim makes the case that the law presented to us in the Old Testament is not a code in the same way modern readers often think of a law code. Isaiah said that God's word is like a seed. Jon: Yeah. Seek me. Jon: Well, he'll remember the story. 44m, Referring to the Passover lamb. He, himself doesn't know. It's kind of like that. What is our purpose? God fears. Example, don't make your food and don't lite a fire, those two get probed and debated over to make a list of 40. I'm reading all this ancient legal literature again?" Instead of giving a gift to the Levites you give a gift to the poor within your town. We believe the Bible is a unified story that leads to Jesus. I want to understand what he means by the kingdom of God is here.". They are inviting the listener in to experience this little narrative world in a way that will give new understanding, a new insight. One is they'll take a law and then they'll expand it into 40 more. And when we see the parables in that context, I think so many things pop in what they are, what they do, and what they're trying to communicate. It starts with the opening verse of scripture. Jon: How do you obey those laws when you don't even have the temple? But it's not enough to pay your taxes and what provides for your family. ", Tim: Totally. Jon: Well, because these parables will create theological questions. Tim: The laws throughout history in Judaism and Christianity have created different crises of biblical authority. This is one small but significant example that illustrates how important interpreting the law was in Israel. All right. Then the priests are appointed, everything's great, and then to have the priests blow it big time. Jon: But instead it's like, "Let me patiently and kind of playfully bring you along on this imaginative journey.". And what our ancestors did was turn away from this God, we're unfaithful to him. There's more than one occasion where people approached, asked what he meant, but it does seem that the function of them as puzzling and inviting is a part of their purpose. Tim: Moshe? But in Deuteronomy 16:6-7, Moses tells the people to boil it. Tim: We've already talked about that first one, that there are irrelevant, sometimes primitive and barbaric. 1hr 12m, You can watch and listen to our. So we're focusing on the Gospels and the presentation of Jesus as a teller of parables. These parables are beloved to generations of followers of Jesus for millennia now. Instead of making points more clear, people were often puzzled and surprised by Jesus parables. Jon: The service fee? Thanks for joining us. It's not a religious principle in the Merriam Webster dictionary definition. So we need to address that. So what follows after that are six long chapters about ritual impurity and purity - how to make things pure after they've been made impure. Jesus stories are designed to tease, to clothe the shocking and revolutionary message about Gods Kingdom in garb that would leave the listeners wondering, trying to think it out. It's a small difference. Jesus announced that Gods Kingdom had come, accompanied by incredible stories you hear of miracles and deliverance. The Bible is an ancient Jewish collection of sacred literature made up of many different literary styles. Jon: In Exodus, it says, "Roast, do not boil. Jon: Moral attitude or religious principle. It just you're repurposing one part, but there'll be some problems with it, and then it won't explain all these other features. Watch and Explore over 150 BibleProject videos. Do you see what he's doing here? I don't know. Tim: Yeah, that's right. But then there were other people who were impressed that there was something here with this man and that the signs and wonders he performed, and the teachings and his parables gave them a new way of thinking about what they thought they knew. Jon: Or you're saying that their purpose isn't to teach theological statement - they're ideas? not like, "What's the essence of the law? And then all of a sudden, he was so excited, I mean, he wanted me to pound in nails just so you could pull them. Head, legs, and entrails" So it's very clear. There are some genealogies that make people bored, but I think they're fascinating. I'm telling you the classic rabbinic conversation. So they're close. Tim: Yeah, that's what the Talmud is. Jon: Wait, before Rome was officially in charge, it was who? Tim: And they have to be totally reconceived how you might fulfill them. Jon: I'm repeating what I think I heard you say. So you go down here and there's a big crowd. For most of human history, and certainly in the ancient Near East that was not how law worked. It's more of a courtesy. Tim: In terms of removing skin and all this, just cook it as it is. Do not eat any of it raw or boiled." Tim: And what he quotes is Psalm 24. You want it to come. Jon: So you'd have your own king, which means you're free from the Romans. Fig trees, olive trees, fruit wheat, harvest time, seed time. It's more of a courtesy. Tim: It's actually very similar to when my little boys - we have a small garage with the tools shed and they'd love to use my tools for all the wrong purpose. That's his main theme. Tim: That's right. As we'll see, there are important precedents in the prophets of the Hebrew Bible, and in Jewish teachers from the time of Jesus and after him, but his parables have a distinctive stamp because of what they are about. Jon: Yes. Jon: I remember the first time reading through the Bible, I was in a haze through all of that stuff. Skydive Loxbeats. We think of the law as something written somewhere. Isaiah again reduced them to two. That's a quote from Deuteronomy chapter 33. 1. Jon: And these are then the further laws and customs that Jewish people will use? All these rebellion narratives in Numbers. So I need certain amount of that to just pay for my family through the year Jon: And to plant the field for the next year. Tim: Sell your land or sell yourself. Exodus 12 says, "Don't bashal the Passover." I think if that guy Jesus of Nazareth comes back, I think I'm going to go back. Maybe they're a little condensed stories that for those who will get the time to ponder it, he's actually saying something really profound but in a concealed way. Each literary style lives by its own rules and structure. You do it occasionally. Tim: It's mostly narrative, but with long speeches, and parables and occasional poems woven in, especially in the Gospel of Luke. That's not for your use or to sell, but you have to go take it to the tax collector checkpoint. Tim: Oh, got it. God speaks to Israel in the Ten Commandments and then 42 more follow. But it's not about me. This is good. Some larger body of laws have been drawn upon and selected. But then you have Paul the apostle, who says that the Messiah is the fulfillment of the Torah, but yet he'll still quote from the Ten Commandments. For clergy, there's this tax rule called the housing allowance. 46m, There are many regions of the world that are like this. Versus a style in which just, "Let me tell you what you need to understand." 1hr 13m, In Deuteronomy, it says, "You and this list of people is not supposed to work. So in the same way, all these ritual laws about bodily fluids, and purity, and sacrifices, and Sabbath, all the feasts, and all the holy days that are set on patterns of the number seven, this is all symbolic worldview, stuff. But that was Babylon. This is great. Jon: So parables are a remarkable part of Jesus' life. Not like you can yell to the people on the other side, but you can see the other side. As you're telling it back to Elisabeth, Moshe, you remember, "Oh, yeah, it was interesting he said this detail that the farmer doesn't himself know how it grows. Jon: Why do you find interesting. This is often contradictory with how many people today interact with the parables of Jesus, expecting their message to be immediately applicable to us. Why does this man eat with sinners and tax collectors? What's he saying." I mean, if you think what cultural religious community has been celebrating the same thing every year for 3,500 years? That's all they are. Jesus says, "Which one became the neighbor?" That's it. I'll grant you that." If you go live in another country Tim: you don't have housing allowance. That's a better way of saying it than I did a couple of minutes ago. The Obvious & Extravagant Claim of the Gospel. However, it's important to note that, that 613 contains two commands that. It's just worth letting that sink in that one of Jesus's favored modes of communication. If you take those two out, you get 611. The top 10, those are good. Tim: Yeah. They have an important role in every gospel account. Tim: We're talking about how to read the legal or law parts of the Old Testament. Tim: There are two implicit commands that aren't formed as thou shalt or thou shalt not. In other words, Moses makes explicit here that it's not just for you it's not just for rich landowners. Tim: That's right. Even though it's smaller than all other seeds, yet when it is sound, it grows and becomes larger than all the garden plants. Tim: Do you see that? We usually break those anyway. But it eventually does come to completion. The parable of a Good Samaritan. Tim notes that for centuries, interpreting biblical law has been a major point of debate among Christians, Jews, and everyone else. Tim: Oh, sorry, what Isaiah said. Jon: Short, yeah. You'd be like a rebellion of the priests and then there will just be a set of laws about Nazarite vows or additional offerings you make on the Sabbath. He's turning the whole thing upside down. When you read this in Aramaic and Hebrew, these guys know the Bible so well, all they have to do is utter a phrase. This is Merriam Webster dictionary, famous American English dictionary. Tim: It's unique to the religious history of one particular country. Amos came and reduced them to one. In America, religious institutions are given a certain nonprofit tax status. It's not direct. But then you get long ones like the vineyard managers. Tim: They add a little, little bit of extraWhat do you call that? 71min Episode 2 Jesus and the Parables of the Prophets And now for clergy who qualify. Tim: So they're not primarily just more or less big tales telling you what could be a good person, but they do often address ethical values. It's thrilling. You live by that hope. So this definition actually doesn't set you up well to understand what the parables are about, and why Jesus chose parables. Jon: "Roast it and eat it." Rabbi Hamnuna says, "What verse of scripture indicates that there are 613?" Why does he heal on the Sabbath? They die. This guide will offer you a process and framework for discerning a particular decision using the approaches and prayer methods in the Ignatian tradition. Well, I don't know. But then you hear him tell a parable about how two guys owed somebody a bunch of money. Tim: Yeah, exactly. In other words, in this definition, the point of parables is to take something that is unclear or less than clear or maybe not persuasive like a moral attitude, or a religious idea and to make them more understandable, more persuasive. We see that Jesus said, Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. (Matthew 5:17) So what can Paul mean when he says, For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. (Romans 10:4) Yet Paul still quotes from the Ten Commandments in places like Ephesians 6:1-3. Make the curtains this way. God shows up, comes to live in the tabernacle, and Moses can't go in. Jon: You've had this land for generations. Tim: Yeah, a lot, as it turns out. Then dead corpses are in the holy place, which is one of the main ways that things become ritually impure. He's going to come back and dwell in the temple in Zion and kick out the bad guys. Let's go to another difference. So for the last 40 years, you've been living under Roman occupation. Jon: The wording of the law. 1hr 8m, Roast it, Tim: Correct. Small seed that becomes a large tree big and birds can you hang out in it. Tim: "What did he mean? Solomon, Hezekiah, Josiah. And they're like, "Well, I need it." This is a major issue. He's actually calling people to repent from all the years of unfaithfulness to Israel's God. Jon: Did he? This is what you need to do." "Rabbi Simlai continued and said, 'David came, and he reduced them all down to 11.'". "Don't boil it at all with water, rather, roast it with fire. Jon: It's waiting for something very real to happen in human history - very geopolitical event. Then there are laws about Israel being in the camps as the organization of their camps, laws about trumpets. How many are there?" Like it's all fine? Tim: It doesn't explain the design of the whole thing. Jon: And the way it's written is what Tim: The wording of the law. The main video in which The Bible Project explains the atonement is " Sacrifice and Atonement ". Because like Phineas and like Elijah, they were full of violence zeal, passion for Israel's God to be honored among the nations. The way that laws work in the storyline of the Bible, once it's pointed out to you, it seems really common sense. This is really interesting. Maybe like because some years it doesn't grow as well. Tim: Yeah, that it had arrived in him. In this first episode of a new series, Tim and Jon talk about what parables are and how Jesus used them in surprising ways. Oh, man, they are confusing", Tim: I see. One of the main purposes of the Bible is to reveal who God is. Tim: Give me a name. So there's a difference of audience. Tim: Also statute, ordinance. Six days, labor, do your work. Then there's additional clarification that says: don't light a fire on the Sabbath. Jon: Usually short. Jon: Today, we talked about the laws in the Bible. There's a conversation going about the number of laws in the Torah. And so they're creating like a more robust law code. Cut to the chase. And then that's both similar and different to a guy who sows seed and then it grows, but it grows at a pace and in a way that's mysterious. Then there's a sense of law in our common day to day life that floats above that, which is just these are the rules of engagement that we've all agreed on as we live here in this city, in this state, and in this country and so on. If it was like 8,000 that would, Jon: And you're like, "Really? But it's about politics in the classic sense. There are all sorts of laws over everything. The soil just produces crops by itself. Above all, this is a time for us as followers of Jesus to remember we have a hope that transcends all of this. The Sabbath, for one generation, Moses will word it one way, for another generation, Moses will word it to another way. Pilgrim Instrumental In Christian tradition, it's been similar problem, but in different ways. Here's why I don't think this should bother us. "There was a guy hurt on the side of the road. The one who walks righteously - He's now quoting from Isaiah chapter 33 - walks righteously, speaks uprightly, despises the gain of oppression, shakes his hand from holding bribes, stops his ear from hearing of innocent bloodshed." We love a compact size Bible so it fits in a backpack, briefcase, purse, or glove box and can easily be given away. We encounter all three of these examples in two adjacent chapters in the Torah: Jesus uses parables in a way that requires listeners to work for them. Jon: And that gets us to 613. And you've heard stories that he can heal the blind, that there are people tortured by evil, and Jesus has freed them. That's right. Tim: The other is 613. And then he was like, this thing. Reflect on Scripture that is important to you. And then just the day of baking bread, sweeping your house, looking for lost coins that you dropped. And you can see that process right here within the Torah itself, where the Mount Sinai version of the Sabbath command is stated to that generation who came out of Egypt. Parable: usually a short fictitious story that illustrates a moral attitude or a religious principle. 52m, Jon: And all these biblical authors have been involved in that exercise. Its core principle, but it can be applied in different times and places with different language. What's New Version History Tim: Like starts cutting it down. Just give me the laws. But ancient Jews know exactly what they're doing. Tim: Shema style. So you turned on a microphone. So we gave them over to exile and he allowed these foreign nations to come oppress and take over the land. Consider: The quote is, "God gave us abundant Torah and numerous commandments. Jon: So that becomes a problem. We've designed the project to help ordinary people make disciples through the use of the Bible. Jon: Simlai? And so learning about what law codes were in the ancient world, and how they were actually really, really different than the way we conceive of law, that little conversation we had about law at the beginning here, the way that Moses or Jeremiah, or any of the ancient Israelites, Ruth, would have thought about law would have been really different concept of law. Without meaning, life has no significance or hope.". And then all of a sudden I remember the sermon, where we started talking about God's sovereignty and human free will. If you still want to do this. In the book of Exodus, this is God speaking from the mountain - from the fire cloud. That's not too many.Tim: Oh, it depends on your point of view. Tim: That's right. The numerical value assigned to the Hebrew letters of the word Torah is 611. And to understand the nature of life among this new kingdom people. How it's going to come to be, Jesus wants me to appreciate. And the center of Deuteronomy is chapters 12 to 26, and it's just hundreds of more laws. Tim: In the Babylonian Talmud which is a big collection of traditional Jewish rabbis' conversations about everything in their worldview, but particularly about the hundreds of commands, because there's only 600, and they were trying to discern in these 600 the principles of divine wisdom that governed every aspect of human life, which would require tens of thousands of laws. But if you choose, you can live a life of consequence to this world. He can't even say the word Samaritan. Most of them are repeats. That's his response. Jon: Sure.Tim: It's just straight up.Jon: Let's what the King James does. Are the parables in that context, are they functioning as explainers of moral attitudes or religious ideals? Tim: Oh, yeah.
